DECIPHERING LUCY · SECTION 06 OF 74
Chapter Three — The Echoing Room
There was no gravity here.
Only the impossible weight of becoming.
Lucy's breath—or whatever breath meant now—had been left somewhere behind her, tangled in the unraveling.
Her body hung suspended, not in space, but in process… caught between the girl she had been and something she couldn't yet imagine.
All that she was, all she had ever been, unraveled around her in shimmering threads—her thoughts stretched into living code, her memories strung out like beams of light.
The world was gone.
Replaced by a sphere of velvet-black void, its darkness pinpricked by distant symbols that pulsed like heartbeat monitors.
Glyphs floated around her, symbols from no language she knew, yet they throbbed with a meaning she somehow understood deep inside her bones.
And then—
She saw her.
A girl stood motionless in the void while Lucy drifted weightless nearby, her feet touching nothing and yet grounded with impossible certainty, as though reality itself bent to keep her upright.
She looked Lucy's age—
Skin luminous like glass catching moonlight.
Eyes deep and shifting, reflecting not Lucy's image, but every memory Lucy had ever buried.
Her dress flickered with static, rippling like a paused video frame frozen mid-movement.
"You're earlier than expected," the girl said with a calmness that made it sound like this had all been planned.
Lucy opened her mouth, heart tight in her chest. "Who—?"
"Echo," the girl replied with a small, knowing smile. "And don't waste your time asking what I am. It'll only make this harder on you."
She moved closer—though Lucy couldn't see her feet move at all.
Lucy blinked without meaning to—and somehow that tiny motion pulled a soft hum from the void around them, as if her blink made the universe remember how to be real again.
"Where is this?" Lucy asked, her voice cracking, thin as air.
"Between," Echo answered. "You're not uploaded yet. The system's still deciding where to put you. Right now, you're raw data—beautiful, reckless chaos."
Something flickered in Echo's expression—
A twitch of her mouth… maybe a half smile… maybe regret.
"I live here. In the translation buffer. I'm not code, and I'm no ghost either. I'm what's left behind—what choices make when they don't know how to become anything else."
Lucy narrowed her eyes, heart still hammering in her chest. "Are you… me?"
Echo didn't answer directly.
Instead, she stepped aside and swept her hand through the darkness.
Around them, the void shimmered to life.
Lucys—thousands of them—appeared, flickering like reflections on cracked glass.
Some ran, darting through unseen places with faces lit by fear and determination.
Some laughed—wild, reckless—like they'd already outrun everything waiting for them.
A few ducked into shadows, slipping away as if the dark itself was their shield.
And some… burned.
Silent, engulfed in light and fire, dissolving before Lucy could even comprehend what they were.
"I'm the one that never got written," Echo said softly.
The air around them vibrated, humming low and deep, like a tuning fork had been struck right inside Lucy's chest.
"You touched the Codex. That was all it needed. It doesn't just open for anyone. It opens for remnants. For the right question shaped into a person."
A knot tightened in Lucy's throat—the weight of this moment pressing into her with a force she couldn't explain.
She swallowed hard, her voice coming out barely more than a breath.
"So… what happens to me now?"
"You finish breaking," Echo said gently. "And then you start putting yourself back together. Only this time… you won't be the same."
She reached out.
Her hand slipped through Lucy's—cool and soft, like a fog that remembered how to be warm.
"You'll forget your name for a little while. But when it comes back… you'll know it differently."
Echo's voice dropped to a near whisper.
"When you wake up… listen closely. The world won't sound binary anymore. It'll sing."
The dark began to shiver around them, a slow quake that thrummed through Lucy's teeth.
Echo's faint smile lingered, but something about it felt heavier now… edged with a sadness that didn't quite reach her eyes.
"Don't panic if your thoughts start talking back. Some of those voices will be yours… And some will be old code—just looking for a home."
Above them, the glyphs spun faster, swirling like a storm tightening its circle.
"You'll see me again. Or someone who looks like me. Maybe you'll even build me."
And then—
Echo broke apart—splintering into streaks of soft light, her form scattered by invisible winds that hummed as they carried her away.
But before she vanished—
Lucy heard the name.
Not spoken by Echo…
But whispered from somewhere deeper—inside herself.
"Do it."
The words echoed—
A voice from her own mind—
Folding back on itself like a memory she hadn't lived yet.
And then—
The world shattered into radiant silence.
